Locative Case (Miejscownik) is the sixth case in the Polish language. It is mainly used after certain prepositions, especially prepositions describing location such as in, over, or next to.
Example
Czekam w samochodzie. - I'm waiting in the car.
samochodzie - Locative Case
samochód - Nominative Case
What is a Case?
Each case has its own interrogative words that it answers. The Locative Case answers (o) kim? and (o) czym?.
o kim?- refers to people
o czym?- refers to things, animals, and abstractions
The interrogative words of a case can be used to form questions about that part of the sentence. The following examples demonstrate this concept.
Examples
o kim?
Rozmawiamy o nauczycielce.- We are talking about the teacher.
O kim rozmawiacie?- Who are you talking about?
o czym?
Piszę książkę o programowaniu.- I am writing a book about programming.
O czym piszesz książkę?- What are you writing a book about?
Asking about location
When asking about location, use the interrogative word gdzie (where) instead of "o czym".
Example
Gdzie jesteś? - Where are you?
Jestem w samochodzie. - I am in the car.
Hi, I'm Jarek
I'm building this website in my free time to help you master Polish 😎. It's a labor of love (and late nights), so your support really keeps me going! If you spot a mistake or have a suggestion, I'd love to hear from you.
You can support my website and my Youtube Channel by buying my grammar book on Amazon. In that book I have clearly explained, how to create different forms of noun depending on the case, number, and gender.
After reading this book you will be able to decline any noun in the Polish language. This book also contains exercises with answers, which will help you practice what you learn.
