Adjective Declension Summary (Odmiana Przymiotnika przez Przypadki)

The ending of an adjective, in Polish, must agree with the gender, number and case of the noun it describes. This makes adjectives a difficult aspect of the Polish language. You can see examples of all these three agreements below. Notice that endings are not always unique (for instance Instrumental and Locative cases have the same ending in the examples).

Gender agreement

Examples
To jest czerwony kwiatek. (masculine)It is a red flower.
To jest czerwona lampa. (feminine)It is a red lamp.
To jest czerwone jabłko. (neuter)It is a red apple.

Number agreement

Examples
To jest czerwony kwiatek. (singular)It is a red flower.
To są czerwone kwiatki. (plural)These are red flowers.

Case agreement

Examples
To jest czerwony kwiatek. (Nominative Case)It is a red flower.
Nie ma czerwonego kwiatka. (Genitive Case)There is no red flower.
Przyglądam się czerwonemu kwiatkowi. (Dative Case)I'm looking at a red flower.
Widzę czerwony kwiatek. (Accusative Case)I see a red flower.
Interesuję się czerwonym kwiatkiem. (Instrumental Case)I'm interested in a red flower.
Mówię o czerwonym kwiatku. (Locative Case)I'm talking about the red flower.
Gdzie jesteś czerwony kwiatku! (Vocative Case)Where are you red flower!
We are going to analyze the endings in 5 different groups:
  • Masculine Singular Adjectives
  • Feminine Singular Adjectives
  • Neuter Singular Adjectives
  • Masculine Personal Plural Adjectives
  • Other Plural Adjectives
