Introduction

Genitive Case is the second case in the Polish language. It is mainly used to express possession. Most of the usages of the word of in English will be translated to Polish as Genitive.

butelka mleka - a bottle of milk


mleka - Genitive

mleko - Nominative

większość użyć słowa 'of' - most of the usages of the word 'of'


użyć - Genitive

użycia - Nominative


słowa - Genitive

słowo - Nominative

The Genitive Case answers to the questions kogo? and czego?. It means, that when you want to ask about a part of a sentence, which is in Genitive Case, then you have to use one of these words in the question:

  • kogo - for nouns, which refer to people
  • czego - for nouns, which refer to things, animals, abstractions, etc

kogo?

Nie widzę nauczyciela. - I don't see the teacher.

Kogo nie widzę? - Who I don't see?

czego?

Potrzebuję pomocy. - I need help.

Czego potrzebuję? - What do I need?
